Spill-Proof: Inside Morrows’ Emergency Response Training

At Morrows Logistics, safety is paramount. As a company handling hazardous materials, we take pride in our thorough, targeted Emergency Response Training programs.
From spill response to emergency evacuations, we are committed to equipping our team with the knowledge and tools to act decisively in critical situations. Every warehouse employee and truck driver knows how to respond effectively to dangerous goods emergencies.
“Maintaining an exemplary safety record through continuous training and preparedness is high on our priority list,” says Work Health & Safety Manager Mark Yates.
Prepared to Respond
We have a structured approach to dealing with hazardous materials, whether a chemical spill at our warehouses or an emergency on the road.
Our Dangerous Goods Emergency Response training covers various scenarios, including:
- Transport emergency response: Ensuring our drivers are prepared to respond to accidents or spills while on the road.
- In-house chemical response: Training warehouse operators on handling chemical spills within the facility.
- Emergency evacuation response: Preparing staff for rapid evacuation during severe incidents.
Transport Emergency Response Preparedness (TERP)
We equip every truck in the Morrows fleet for emergencies on the road with a spill kit that includes absorbent pads, PPE, and other tools to manage minor spills.
“If a more significant incident occurs beyond our control, we escalate to emergency services and engage our external partner, IXOM,” says Mark.
Training for Warehouse Chemical Spills (REARE)
“Our recent training program for warehouse staff focused on the REARE method, a step-by-step process to manage chemical spills”, said Mark.
REARE stands for:
- Raise the alarm: Immediately notify all personnel of the spill.
- Evacuate: Safely evacuate the area to minimise exposure.
- Assess: Once evacuated, assess the spill from a distance to determine its nature and the required PPE.
- Respond: Enact the appropriate chemical response and clean-up procedures.
- Examine: Debrief, investigate the incident, and implement preventative measures for the future.
“This training is conducted quarterly across all sites to ensure every employee, regardless of background, stays familiar with our emergency protocols,” says Mark.
Overall, we’re proud of our proactive approach to safety and are pleased to report that we have had no major chemical spills or exposures.
